The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Comes After Poor Response

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a clearer vision.

The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full text from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”

Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our players.

The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. After a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on the specified date.

His management and experience in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in greeting him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

David

Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and pray your team can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."

The game lacks an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as production continues.
